EUROPEAN LABELING STANDARDS

Definitions (EN 1885): The following definitions are used in the labelling of down and feather products in Europe:
- DOWN
Down cluster (see below) + allowance of up to 5% down fibre as a % of down cluster.
Down Cluster = Downs + Plumules + Nestling Downs. - FEATHERS
Feathers (no quills) + allowance of up to 9% feather fibre and damaged/chopped feathers as a % of feathers. - LANDFOWL
Non-waterfowl feathers, such as chicken, turkey, etc. - OTHER ELEMENTS
The sum of down fibre in excess of 5% allowance
+ Feather fibre & chopped/damaged feathers in excess of 9% allowance, + Landfowl + Residue + Quill feathers + Reprocessed feathers (couché) - CLASS

If a product has 60% or more ”DOWN” the product may be advertised as a “DOWN PRODUCT.” See EN 13186. (The minimum down cluster required for a product labelled as 60% down is 52.38%)

CLEANLINESS (EN 12935):
Required: Oxygen Number (EN 1162) < 20 mg/100g
If oxygen > 20 then Microbiological State (Bioburden EN 1884) must be tested.
Optional: Turbidity (EN 1164) > 300 mm pH value (ISO 3071) 6.6 - 8.0 Oil & Fat Content (EN 1163) 0.5% - 2.0%
FILL POWER (EN 12130 : 2018)
Method A: Steam conditioning (mm/30g)
Method B: Tumble Dry (mm/30g)
Method C: Box conditioning (mm/30g)
Height: mm/30g or Volume: cm3/g & in3/30g
Allowed tolerance -5%
FILLING MASS (Net fill weight) (EN 13088)
Allowed tolerance ±5%
